The world's energy needs are increasing daily. That means our monthly electricity bills are going up too and, given today's financial problems, who wouldn't be interested in some cheap electricity?
That goal is now achievable through alternative energy solutions such as solar power, wind power generation, geothermal energy and hydro-power. Large wind turbines are beginning to dot the landscapes and seascapes around the world and various governments are looking at building large-scale solar power plants to provide electricity to their populations. Countries in geological hot zones, like Iceland, can use geothermal energy for almost 100% of of their electricity.
Most electricity, however, is generated by fossil fuels and nuclear power. Both produce by-products that are damaging to the environment - carbon emissions and soil pollutants in the case of the former; long-lived nuclear waste in the case of the latter.
As the world's population grows, the demand for energy keeps going up. The fuels we predominantly use today are not renewable. Oil will run out in less than 50 years, natural gas in about 60 years and there's less than 120 years of coal reserves left on the planet.
So we as individuals need to do our part in reducing the amount of energy we use and what energy we do use should come from renewable energy resources as much as possible. We can wait for our governments to build power plants based on renewable resources but such facilities usually take years to build.
Or, since time is of the essence here, we can start at home by generating some of our own electricity from solar power or wind power. That reduces the amount of fossil fuels needed in national power plants and gives us more time to come up with a long-term alternative energy source, such as nuclear fusion.
And that's what this site is about - providing information about renewable and alternative energy resources that any home owner can use and put into practice to cut the cost of their energy bill and reduce the use of fossil fuels and the consequent damage to our environment.
